Orangey – chocolate chip cookies and an award…

by Sunita on August 15, 2007

We usually try to maintain a healthy lifestyle… proper diet and with some form of exercise. But what really is a big hurdle in spoiling my plans is my sweet tooth. I find it very, very hard to just pass by and ignore the display of chocolates in the supermarket, or anywhere else for that matter. Dinesh gets really upset some times with my chocolaty cravings…well, to defend myself, although I do adore it, I do not gorge on them every day and no, I’m definitely not a big, bloated pig. I just love the feel of chocolate on my tongue a bit more often than I should…well, maybe that does sound like a chocolate addict.

We all know and preach the disastrous effects of chocolate…but did you know that …

  • Chocolate may be effective at preventing persistent coughing. The ingredient theobromine was found to be almost one third more effective than codeine, the leading cough medicine. The chocolate also appears to soothe and moisten the throat.
  • South American and European cultures have used cocoa to treat diarrhea for hundreds of years.
  • Pure chocolate contains anti-oxidants which aid better skin complexion(woowww)!!Chocolate bars with milk content may contribute to acne. It is not the chocolate itself that causes acne, but rather the milk with which the chocolate is mixed.
  • Romantic lore commonly identifies chocolate as an aphrodisiac. The reputed aphrodisiac qualities of chocolate are most often associated with the simple sensual pleasure of its consumption.

I know, that’s the chocoholic in me speaking…all courtesy of the wiki… but with so much going for it(!!!???), how can one say no to chocolate…I definitely can’t anyway {I just hope the kids don’t get to read this post, or I’ll have to pay by being bombarded with their questions!!!…well, as a parent, I’m not allowed to, (and I definitely don’t) extol the virtues of chocolate, am I…no! I , like a good mum, make sure that they and chocolates very rarely meet !}

update-(how could I have missed this chance to gloat!!!!)

A short while ago, Cynthia was sweet enough to think that I rocked. (??!!)…and she passed over an award…Thanks Cynthia…I’m now so far removed from those award winning days of school and college, that it really felt good to receive one. And since it is now my turn to pass on the nice feeling, the following are the ones who I nominate…many of you who I wanted to pass it on have already received it, but with so many of you rocking girl bloggers, I’m spoilt for choice…so here goes- Shn of Mishmash
Sia of Spice Corner

Sig of Live to Eat
Patricia of Technicolor kitchen

…all you girls do rock.

…and since I’m on a high, let me treat my readers with these orangey chocolate chip cookies, which I made in the following way (one of those rare kids -meet- chocolate days!)…
What’s needed-

2C of plain flour
3 tblsp of porridge oats
1 tsp baking powder
3 tblsp butter
3 tblsp honey
juice of an orange
2-3 tblsp of milk
2 handfuls of plain chocolate chips

How to-

  1. Pre-heat the oven at 160 deg cel.
  2. Grease a baking tray.
  3. In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder and the oats.
  4. Add the honey and the butter and rub into the flour mixture with fingertips.
  5. Add the chocolate chips, milk and orange juice and gently bring th emixture together, again with fingertips…no kneading here.
  6. Make 18 equal sized balls and place them well apart from each other on th eprepared baking tray.
  7. Flatten each lightly with the fingertips, keeping it somewhat rough-looking.
  8. Bake in the centre of the pre- heated oven for 15-20 minutes or till the sides begin to brown, but they are still soft in the centre.
  9. Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on the tray itself for 5 minutes.
  10. Transfer the cookies to a cooling rack and cool completely before storing in air tight containers.

The cookies were nice and soft to dig into…the orange adding its flavour and they were not,(apart from the chips here and there), overtly sweet.

I had made some modifications, for the starters i had halfed the recipe, also i used margarine and not butter, also i ommitted orange juice, can you please suggest me what exactly went wrong, i would really like to make these cookies. Also how much exactly is 1 cup of flour in grams?
